Functional Patterns

Functional Patterns is a biomechanics based training system designed to improve how the human body moves in real life. It focuses on posture, gait, breathing, rotation and movement efficiency by looking at the body as an interconnected system, rather than treating muscles or symptoms in isolation.

Posture and gait assessment

We assess how your body stands, walks, rotates and transfers force. This helps identify where your movement may be compensating, inefficient or placing repeated stress through certain areas.

Myofascial release

Targeted release work may be used to reduce excessive tension and improve tissue quality, especially when certain muscles are overactive, guarded or limiting better movement.

Corrective exercise

Exercises are selected to help reposition, stabilise and strengthen the body in a way that supports better posture, cleaner movement and more efficient mechanics.

The goal is not just to exercise harder. It is to move better.

Unlike general fitness programs that often focus on isolated muscles or isolated strength, Functional Patterns places more emphasis on how the entire body coordinates during the movements humans rely on most: standing, walking, running and rotation.

This is especially important for people dealing with recurring tightness, chronic pain, postural changes, scoliosis, gait issues, old injuries or movement patterns that keep breaking down under load. In many cases, the painful area is not the whole problem. It may simply be where the body is absorbing stress from a larger compensation pattern.

At Functional Training Melbourne, we use the Functional Patterns system to help clients improve how their body manages pressure, alignment, rotation and force transfer. The aim is to create more sustainable movement, reduce unnecessary strain and give the body a better foundation for long term function.

Who this approach is for

For bodies that need more than a generic exercise program.

Functional Patterns can be especially useful when your body keeps returning to the same pain, tightness or compensation patterns despite trying to get stronger, stretch more, train harder or stay consistent.

Chronic pain and recurring tightness

When the same areas keep tightening, flaring up or feeling restricted, we look at how the whole body is organising movement and where unnecessary stress may be building.

Posture and structural changes

For forward head posture, rounded shoulders, rib flare, pelvic shifts, scoliosis or visible asymmetries, the goal is to improve how the body stacks, breathes and transfers force.

Gait and movement compensation

Walking, running and rotational mechanics reveal a lot about how the body manages pressure, balance and load. These patterns are often where deeper compensations show up.

Old injuries that still affect movement

Even when an old injury is no longer painful, the body may still protect, avoid load or move around it. We look at how those patterns are still influencing the system.

Training that keeps breaking down

If your body does not respond well to normal strength training, the missing piece may not be effort. It may be how your body is organising alignment, timing and force.

Complex bodies needing precision

The more complex the body feels, the more important it becomes to progress carefully. We assess, adjust and build movement step by step instead of forcing generic exercises.

How we apply it

We do not guess. We assess, test and rebuild movement step by step.

At Functional Training Melbourne, the process starts by looking at how your body is currently organising itself. We assess posture, breathing, gait, rotation, muscle tone and how different parts of the body are interacting. From there, we build a plan based on what your body actually shows us.

01

Assess the pattern

We look at how your body stands, breathes, walks, rotates and manages load. This helps us see where the system is compensating and what may be driving the recurring issue.

02

Reduce unnecessary tension

When certain areas are overactive, guarded or restricting movement, release work may be used to create a better starting point before rebuilding the movement pattern.

03

Rebuild better mechanics

Corrective exercises are then used to help the body access better alignment, pressure, rotation and force transfer. The goal is cleaner movement, not just more exercise.

The process is specific to the person in front of us.

Two people can have similar pain but completely different movement strategies. That is why we do not use a one size fits all program. We adjust the work based on your structure, your history, your current capacity and how your body responds during each session.

The first step

It starts with understanding how your body is moving.

Before giving you exercises, we first need to understand what your body is doing. The initial assessment gives us the chance to look at your posture, gait, breathing, rotation, compensation patterns and how your body responds to specific changes.

From there, we can explain what may be contributing to your pain, tightness or movement restrictions and what direction makes the most sense for your body.

During the assessment, we look at:

Posture and structural asymmetries
Walking, gait and rotation mechanics
Breathing and pressure control
Areas of excessive tension or restriction
How your body responds to correction
The clearest starting point for rebuilding movement
Why it is different

Functional Patterns is not built around random exercises. It is built around human movement.

Most training focuses on getting stronger, fitter or more flexible. Functional Patterns is different because it asks a deeper question: can your body organise itself well during the movements it was designed to perform most often?

It connects the whole body

The foot, knee, hip, pelvis, spine, ribs, shoulders and head are all connected. Functional Patterns looks at how these areas influence each other instead of treating them as separate parts.

It prioritises real movement

The system places strong emphasis on standing, walking, running, rotation and force transfer because these are the movements that reveal how the body actually functions.

It respects compensation

If the body has adapted around pain, injury, posture or stress, forcing harder exercises can make things worse. We first need to understand why the compensation exists.

The aim is better function that carries into daily life.

The goal is not to make you good at an exercise inside the gym. The goal is to improve how your body manages itself when you stand, walk, train, work, move and live outside the session.

Start with clarity

If your body keeps returning to the same patterns, the first step is understanding why.

The initial assessment gives us the chance to look closely at how your body is moving, where it may be compensating and what needs to change before progressing into more advanced training.

From there, you will have a clearer understanding of what your body needs and whether Functional Training Melbourne is the right fit for you.
